Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky appeal.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
