One of the co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction of a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.

The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company with his partner, announced that he will independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal collection showcasing issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Between Founders versus Parent Company

The recent development deepens the ongoing disagreement among the world-famous ice cream maker and Unilever, the UK-based consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Support

The entrepreneur revealed through social media that he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name and additional components.

“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen declared from a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.”

This particular fruit has become an emblem for support for the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming product line will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company that was first created several years back for endorsing former political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes and Future Plans

Mr. Cohen revealed that he will create additional frozen dessert varieties that address concerns that the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.

The announcement comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to curb its social activism.

Previously, Mr. Cohen commented how "Jerry has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to keep working inside the company to advocate for its independence ensuring that the company can achieve the social mission, the principles which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
