New Year Celebrants Told to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK
Forecasters are saying an icy beginning to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Proceed In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the weather service.
Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Across the UK, the weather is set to be ideal for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and clear skies. Temperatures are expected to be chilly, making additional clothing vital, said forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.
- Commuting is likely to be disrupted.
- People should to allow extra time for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are anticipated on public transport.
The Mercury Set to Plummet Further
Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Warnings Issued
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities said this meant the weather could to lead to major effects across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in security, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
