Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such medications must be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
