The star has given the entirety of his twenty-five thousand pound honor winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

Fender was given the cheque on October 16 as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to hand the money over to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the performances I played around the area, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these venues have shut down – about one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts including the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which supports independent venues.

He also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to assist 38 grassroots venues across Britain.

These funds supported spaces that were facing possible closure due to difficulties arising from water damage, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Additional spaces were granted financial assistance in modernizing amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and fans.

"The idea that funds from performances in large arenas helps the independent spots, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has said.

He is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

Back when Pulp received the prize in the mid-90s for their record Different Class, lead singer Cocker stated that the act would contribute their cash to the non-profit War Child.

That year, musician she split her prize among several organizations, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell organization.

"I also gave a £1,000 to the center, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," the artist shared with outlets.

Two years ago, Ezra Collective contributed their winnings to the local youth club that nurtured their group, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year M People contributed their prize to a charity for MS after a friend was found to have the disease.

"The victory was quite enough," stated artist Small. "The money was the cherry on top but we could do without the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the Music Venues Trust revealed it had protected several local spots in south-east England, by bringing them into community ownership.

The Joiners in the city and The Croft in that location were purchased under the public acquisition program, which is backed by a national body and supporters who acquire "shares" in the properties.
