The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police are describing as a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll is 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.
The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the victims who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the moments before the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with five in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
