Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Quintana Roo on March 20th.

A large-scale search and recovery operation is presently under way in the Caribbean Sea for a pair of unlocated sailboats loaded with aid cargo en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.

Military Rescue Missions Launched

Mexico has deployed naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were had on board at least 9 crew members, according to a navy statement.

The vessels had been projected to arrive in Cuba's capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their docking, the navy said.

Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on aid convoys from Mexico over recent weeks, as the nation grapples with repeated nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and the two ships are equipped with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official involved in the effort commented.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Mission

Previously that week, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had transported 14 tonnes of donated goods to the country.

That boat, called "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, drugs, formula milk, bikes and food.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of "dire" shortages of supplies, with over 50,000 surgeries postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Diplomatic tensions have intensified over the past months, with statements from different officials emphasizing the complicated nature of bilateral relations.

Responding to certain proposals, a prominent Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations were initiated, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The naval forces said it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to discover the boats and guarantee the safety of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
