Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - notched his next goal in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to St James' Park on late October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
