The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point in his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for most New York City mayors after the post-war period.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, was not quick to announce this decision right away after his triumph in November.

"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on carrying out the platform on affordability voters supported," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.

"Even though I'm moving there, Astoria will forever remain within me and my work," he added.

Political Debate

During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

But his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a place for civic gatherings, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting very different than his humble Astoria digs.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.

Internally, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments crucial resources as the housing expenses rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
